Help Yohan Gupta’s story reach someone new.
Yohan is a feisty, mischievous 2 year old. He has always been like this. He likes to pull her 6 year old sister’s hair but at the same time ask me non stop as when it will be time to pick her up from school. To an outsider, he is a healthy 2 year old but little do they do know he has chronic kidney disease. He will soon be going on dialysis and will be activated on transplant list.
Last year changed our lives forever. We were on a vacation to India with our then 19 months old son and 5 year old daughter. Both of them were excited to meet their cousins and extended family. On June 28, Yohan got diarrhea and on advice of his doctor, I made sure he gets enough fluids. Next day there was blood in diarrhea and I took him to emergency. At first they suspected dysentery but his condition started deteriorating with each passing day. He stopped talking, eating and playing altogether. There no more cuddles, smiles and laughters. On July 2, he was moved to another hospital and we were told he has HUS and his condition is critical. There was a big chance that we were going to lose him. We were distraught and were living a nightmare.
Soon they started hemodialysis and blood transfusions. His blood pressure skyrocketed and even with the maximum doses of 5 different medicines, it was hard to control. He continued getting dialysis for a little over 2 months. By the end of 2 months, his blood pressure stabilized with fewer medicines and we were airlifted to Lucile Packard Children’s hospital.
His condition improved a little and came off of dialysis. He was inactively listed for transplant. He had his NG tube for all his feeds and water. This April, he got his gtube and because of surgery, his kidneys took further hit and now he is going to go back on dialysis and will be activated on transplant list.
My husband and I, both tested to be his living donor. My husband wasn’t a match and I was rejected after extensive testing. We were heartbroken as we couldn’t have a living donor. We have no family here, which makes everything difficult to manage. Our 6 year old daughter is also trying hard to be understanding but at her age it’s difficult to do so. We are truly looking for a miracle.
