Although I learned that I had inherited PKD at 13 years old, I was told that I would be well into my 60s before my body would begin to suffer the adverse effects of this disease. Though there was nothing I could do to prepare for the inevitable, I was aware of my future condition. I loved life to the fullest, expecting to have many years before my fate was revealed.

In 2009, I fell in love with Nicholas Meyer, and we were married on October 20, 2018. We went about our lives as usual. Then, at the age of 36, I got the heartbreaking news that my health had drastically declined. I began peritoneal dialysis (which failed), then began hemodialysis, suffered cyst ruptures, was unable to work for over a year, and my emotional state was severely impacted. I have been receiving in-center hemodialysis for just over a year now. My entire way of life was altered in an instant.

Since I have devoted a significant portion of my life to caring for others, accepting that I now require assistance has proven to be a challenging task. It is difficult for me to acknowledge my weakness and say that I am having trouble with my current condition. I am asking for the gift of life so that I will no longer rely on a machine to keep me alive and be able to love life once again.

Hi, I’m Steve McCray from Saginaw. Michigan. I am 60, and in need of a kidney transplant. I work as a professional drummer, but since my kidney disease progressed in 2021 to kidney failure and the need for dialysis. Now my career is very limited. I can no longer travel easily to play nationally and internationally like I used to, so my gigs are limited to one day away from home between treatments. A new kidney would give me not only the freedom to resume my full career as a traveling musician, but allow me to look forward to many healthy years with my family.
